Amazing Mahjong

The goal of Amazing Mahjong is to clear all the tiles from the board by matching identical pairs.

The tiles are stacked in layers to form a beautiful pattern. To remove a pair, simply click or tap two matching tiles — they will disappear from the board.

But there's a catch: you can only select tiles that are "free". A tile is free when it has no tile lying on top of it and at least one of its sides (left or right) is open. If a tile is locked between two neighbors or covered by another tile, you'll need to uncover it first.

Most tiles must match exactly. The only exceptions are the season and flower tiles — any season tile can be matched with any other season tile, and any flower tile with any other flower tile.

Plan ahead! Sometimes there are three or even four identical tiles available at once — choosing the wrong pair can block your path later in the game. Try to prioritize pairs that free up the most new tiles, and pay special attention to tall stacks and long rows.

If you get stuck, use the Hint button to reveal an available pair, or shuffle the remaining tiles to keep the game going.

Mahjong is one of the world's great classic games. The original four-player Mahjong game was developed in China in the middle of the 19th century, during the Qing dynasty, evolving from traditional Chinese card games that had been played for centuries. The game's name comes from the Chinese word "máquè", meaning "sparrow" — supposedly because the clacking of the tiles during play sounded like chattering birds.

In the 1920s, Mahjong crossed the ocean to the West. An American businessman named Joseph Babcock, who had worked in China, simplified the rules and began importing Mahjong sets to the United States. The game became a full-blown craze — Mahjong sets sold out across the country, and Mahjong parties, complete with Chinese decorations, became the height of fashion in 1920s America.

The solitaire version that you're about to play has a more surprising origin: it's a computer game! In 1981, a developer named Brodie Lockard created the first tile-matching Mahjong Solitaire game on the PLATO computer system. Remarkably, Lockard programmed the game while paralyzed after a gymnastics accident, using a special screen keyboard. His game was later published by Activision in 1986 as "Shanghai", which became a massive hit and defined the genre.

Mahjong Solitaire reached hundreds of millions of players when Microsoft included its own version, "Taipei", with Windows in the 1990s, alongside classics like Solitaire and Minesweeper. Today, the famous turtle-shaped layout is recognized by puzzle fans all over the world.
